Emily Guggino is the jewelry designer, buyer, & co-owner of Mulberry & Grand. So, she’s basically the ultimate boss lady. Together, with her husband, Emily runs 3 brick and mortar stores in NYC, 1 in San Francisco, and a thriving online business. While running a business and being a mom, Emily somehow manages to show up to work everyday in a full (seems to be) thought out outfit, with boots (or Gucci flats), a full M&G arm party & earrings, & a bold lip. Let’s figure out more about this Superwoman…

Where did you grow up, and how did you end up in New York?

I grew up in Baltimore; the daughter of two scientists.  I always knew I would be in New York. Ever since I was little, I used to imagine myself walking down the street in high heels and a pencil skirt.  Although, I never wear either, heels or skirts, part of that dream became a reality.

Can you tell us a bit about your career journey? Have you always wanted to own your own business?

I always wanted to own my own business. It was always and still is so exciting that limitless possibilities are available when you own your own business.  It’s both thrilling and frustrating that you are totally in control of the outcome, but that’s what’s golden about entrepreneurship.

What inspires you as a designer?

To be perfectly honest, everything inspires me.  Ha! I get really excited about everything. So, it’s been really helpful to have a good team to help me stay focused.

What is your personal must-have fashion item?

Eyeglasses?  I’ve recently given up contacts, so I decided it was time to invested in really fashion forward eyeglasses.

Who do you look to for consistent style inspiration?

Jenny Cipoletti : Margo & Me.  Her style is so glamorous.  It doesn’t fit in with my daily lifestyle, running between the stores, but it’s so dreamy.

What trends from your fall/winter collection are you most excited about?

I’m most excited about the continuation of large geometric shaped earrings and colorful tassels.  There’s nothing easier to change a look than a statement earring.

You’re obviously very busy, running your own successful business & being a mother of two. What is your secret to work/life balance?

I don’t think I’ve mastered balance, it’s a constant struggle, however some of the things that have really helped me along with way are…

  1. Help from moms.  Without the help and support from both, my mom & husband’s mom, I don’t think we would be able to do as much as we are right now.  So, a great support system is really important.

  2. Discipline/ Determination.  I don’t have a business background, and truly believe that to be successful all you need is discipline, consistency, and a lot of determination to tackle everything that running your own business throws at you.

  3. Technology.  We use so much technology and different apps to help us work on the go, and to connect to our team from everywhere.  Whenever we are looking to increase efficiency we always look for an app or program first.

  4. Online shopping.  Since I don’t have much extra time, and I want any extra time spent with my kids, I order everything online.  My kids think all of the Fresh Direct deliveries-person’s names are Fredrick.  It’s hysterical.

Any words of advice for aspiring fashion designers or business owners?

The best piece of advice that I can give, and that I believe, is that consistency is the key to our success. Consistently showing up and pushing forward has gotten us where we are today.
